Owned and operated by Comair, who also operate British Airways flights in South Africa, Kulula Airlines is one of the Top 3 low cost airlines in the country. Known for their witty advertisements and jokey in-flight commentary which has become their unofficial trademark, it’s only fitting that ‘kulula’ means ‘it is light’ or ‘it is easy / simple’ in Zulu.

Kulula Airlines’ journey began just over 10-years ago when they entered the market as the first privately-owned low-cost airline carrier. In April 2014, Kulula and Kenya Airways announced that they will connect the carrier’s networks via OR Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg. What this means is that Kulula.com will place their code (MN) on Kenya Airways’ multiple daily services between Johannesburg and Nairobi, whilst Kenya Airways will be placing their code (KQ) on all South African domestic routes which are presently serviced by Kulula flights; this includes Cape Town, Durban, George and East London. This code share agreement with Kenya Airlines is an extension of the airline carrier’s medium-to-long term strategy to grow their distribution footprint in Africa.

On-flight, passengers are served snacks and beverages by Woolworths, for which they can choose to pay cash or by credit card, and if you’re vegetarian – they have catered for you too.

Painted mambo-green for the cause, the Kulula fleet is made up of fuel-efficient Boeing 737s, which is less harmful to the environment.
